In the far future, humanity has emigrated much of its population into clusters of enormous space colonies, ushering in an era known as Universal Century. After much dissidence against what was believed to be the corrupt and hostile bureaucracy of the Earth Federation, Side 3, the group of colonies furthest from Earth, re-emerged as the Principality of Zeon and formally declares open war against the Earth Federation, sparking the outbreak of the One Year War.

On 3 January of the year 0079 of Universal Century, Zeon's military initiates Operation British. The Side 2 colony Island Iffish begins its descent toward Earth, intended to strike Jaburo, South America. However, The Earth Federation's Tianem Fleet attempted to intercept the falling space colony, causing a fleet battle to erupt between Federation and Zeon forces. The Federation's efforts were successful at diverting the megastructure away from Jaburo, but they did not succeed in stopping its momentum, and it crashes into Sydney, Australia instead, annihilating a third of the island continent and leaving a massive open crater filled with irradiated seawater in its place. The remaining sections fall onto the North American continent and the Pacific Ocean, causing environmental damage. The first week of initial fighting left humanity losing roughly half of its population. The Battle of Loum would soon follow...

Eight months passes by from since the war began; neither side were able to gain a profitable advantage over the other, and it is now September. Determined to counter Zeon's mobile suits, the Federation enacts the V Project/ Operation V on Side 7, anticipating the use of new mobile suits aboard a specialised warship, the Pegasus -class assault carrier. It is at this moment, a Zeon reconnaissance unit led by officer Char Aznable arrives to infiltrate Side 7. During this operation, the Zeon pilot Gene was forced to stand down due to his Zaku mobile suit malfunctioning, so he does not participate, and Char leads the operation personally in his stead. Backed up by soldiers Denim and Slender in their Zakus, Char seizes the opportunity to capture the Federation's newly developed RX-78-02 Gundam, noting the pa
